LinkedIn and Apple Contacts

I bring in role, company and phone number of your contacts from your own LinkedIn data export and your Apple address book. That way I notice job changes and merge people who use several addresses.

Emails alone often don't tell me someone's role or whether they've changed companies. You can add two sources of your own for that: your LinkedIn network and your Apple address book. You'll find both under Contacts.

LinkedIn

At the very bottom of the contacts page is the LinkedIn network box. There are two ways in:

  1. Connect LinkedIn – through the official data portability LinkedIn offers under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). You sign in to LinkedIn and agree; that gives me your own connections list. Right after you agree, LinkedIn sometimes still has to prepare the data. In that case I try again several times over the next few hours. After that I sync regularly. Sync LinkedIn again syncs on demand. The button only appears when this connection is set up.
  2. Upload LinkedIn export (Connections.csv) – always works. On LinkedIn, go to Settings → Data privacy → “Get a copy of your data” → “Connections”, request the file and pick it here. The file is read in your browser.

What happens next

I match each LinkedIn connection to your email contacts: by the email address in the export, or by full name if it occurs only once. For matched people I store role, company and LinkedIn profile as facts with the source “from your LinkedIn network”. The box shows how many connections there are and how many I could match.

If role or company changes at the next sync, I create a “new role” news item – a good reason for a quick congratulation. I also use LinkedIn notification emails in your own mailbox for this.

For individual contacts without a profile, the contact card offers Find LinkedIn profile: a web search for that one person. You confirm the match yourself.

Apple Contacts

In the Consent+ Mac app, the top of the contacts page shows Sync Apple Contacts. macOS then asks whether the app may access your contacts. Only after you allow it do I take over name, phone numbers, company, role, birthday and profile or web addresses, each with the source “from your Apple Contacts”. Entries without an email address are skipped.

Then I check your mailboxes for earlier emails. Until that's done, the card says “checking”. I use birthdays for suggestions under Network, phone numbers for call buttons and for One person, several addresses.

The browser doesn't have this button; address book access needs the Mac app.

If something's wrong

The LinkedIn connection didn’t work. Please try again. Connect again or upload the CSV file. A wrongly matched role can be deleted on the contact card under “What do I know about …?”.
